Why do detectors operate in different frequencies?Updated a year ago

What is the difference in the operating frequencies? This is one of our most commonly asked questions. There are a lot of different metal detectors on the market and each one operates a little different. There are different types of detecting the requires a different frequency to be successful.  The easiest way to understand the frequencies is to remember  the lower the frequency, the better it is at finding highly conductive targets and the higher the frequency the better it is at finding low conductive targets.


What is the difference in the types of targets? Highly conductive items would be silver or large iron. The metal is very conductive so using a lower frequency will be best for finding these type of items. Gold is a very low conductive item and the higher the operating frequency, the better it is at finding gold. Especially small gold like stud earrings or tiny gold nuggets. 


There are a bunch of different detectors on the market that operate in a mid frequency, between 8 kHz and 15 khz. What are these detectors used for? These are your all around detectors that are good at finding a range of items, such as brass, copper or clad coins. They will find silver, gold and large iron as well. 


Picking the right detector for the type of detecting that you will be doing is key! Make sure you check out the operating frequencies when purchasing a detector so that you get the one that is right for you.
